A vague list slows everyone down. “Rice, tomatoes, something for dinner” forces the shopper to choose for you, then wait while you decide. A precise list turns into a faster estimate and fewer substitutions.

Be specific
Name the brand, size, and quantity. “5kg Mama Gold rice” is better than “rice”. “Peak Peak tin 160g, 6 pieces” is better than “milk”. If colour or flavour matters, say so.

Write substitution rules
Mark what can change. “Golden Penny spaghetti, any similar 500g pack if unavailable” is enough. If you will not accept a substitute, write “no substitute”.
Add a budget and photos
A ceiling keeps the estimate honest. Photos of a previous receipt, a screenshot, or the exact shelf item help when the name is unclear. Notes like “shop at Shoprite Ikeja” are welcome when you care about the store.
